2019 Director of the Year Categories

The Director of the Year Award was created to recognize directors for outstanding performance in the boardroom and behind the scenes. Nominees may be from any industry and must be a resident of the San Diego area or serve on a board of a company located in San Diego. Awards are based on the director’s recent achievements, with the exception of the Lifetime Achievement awards. Each nominee should historically exhibit exceptional character traits.

Corporate Governance
Awarded to the director who has been a leader in guiding the board and executive management in growing the company and maintaining high standards and ethics of the board.

Enhancement of Economic Value
Awarded to the director who has brought unique abilities or outside resources to the company, or who has developed innovative applications of new resources to improve the company’s planning, operations and profitability.

Companies in Transition
Awarded to the director who has contributed to taking the company through significant changes (i.e., early start-up, mergers, acquisitions, management changes, etc.) with a positive and productive conclusion.

Emerging Board Leader
Awarded to the director recognized as an emerging board leader (3 years or less of board service) who has contributed to the success of a company.

Not-for-Profit Board Governance
Awarded to the director who has made an outstanding contribution to his or her not-for-profit board, and to the company, with regard to board governance.

Lifetime Achievement
Awarded to the director who has demonstrated superior leadership over several years ensuring consistency of board discipline, maintaining ethics and principles of the board, and guiding their company(s) to higher levels of creativity and performance.

Corporate Directors Forum is a San Diego-based, 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization founded in 1991. Its purpose is to help directors, and those who support them, build more effective boards through continuous learning and peer-networking. We believe that boards of directors are strategic assets of corporations, education makes better directors, better directors make boards more effective, and more effective boards make better corporations.
